Article 1

In "Rethinking Learning in the Digital Age", author Mitchel Resnick had a lot of intriguing things to say about technology and where it's headed. Not what certain things we will have in the future but where our education will go through new technology. He started out by explaining why we need to move away from the "information-centric" views of computing and learning. Terms like "IT" do not just mean moving information around or knowing how to fix a computer. There's something more to that. Resnick talks about the idea of expressing creativity through technology for learning and education.
Computer Clubhouses were a way to get this idea into action. On the east coast, these clubhouses were set up to be used by teens to help them learn to express" themselves and gain confidence in themselves as learners". I personally think this is an amazing place that should be available in every city for teens. It seemed to have a positive influence on some of the kids and I believe it would prove to do the same today.
From here, Resnick takes this idea and blends it with education and learning. He discuses how we need to rethink the technologies that are provided to young people. He encourages schools and teachers to rethink the way they view education and the way people learn. Moving from a "knowledge society" to a more "creative society" would create many new possibilities for our youth in their education. I see what Resnick means about how creativity is surpassing knowledge. People are making big waves through the use of creativity with technology in the pool of success.

  1. Lindsey, I really like how you talked about the importance of encouraging creativity rather than strictly teaching for information. That’s what I got out of the article as well. Also, taking it a little bit further than the article, there is so much more to education, much more to life, then the intake of information. I believe that it comes down to what you do with that information. That’s why every child needs to learn to be creative. With creativity comes the ability to problem solve and do more with what you have. Also, every child needs to be in an environment conducive to creativity and the ability to express one’s self.

  2. Lindsey, I like the focus you placed on Community Clubhouses. These are great resources for both teachers and children. I agree with you that these are amazing centers that should be open all around the country. Perhaps the idea of Community Clubhouses could be extended to the classrom is some respect? I also agree that more value is being placed on creativity and less on knowledge. This is a changing aspect of our society and is changing the way teachers plan instruction.

  3. Linds, I enjoyed reading your thoughts on the Computer Clubhouses. This was a great part of the article to focus on. Like you, I had not heard of these clubhouses before I read this article. I would love to see one of these in the community and see the impact that it could have on children. Like Elsa, I am wondering if we could somehow incorporate our own version of a clubhouse into our future classrooms. This would be a great way in work on teaching children how to utilize technology and information rather than just collecting it.

  4. BAM! Great blog girl! I totally agree with you about moving from a knowledge society to a creative one. There are so many amazing things that we can do with technology and for those young adults who may not be able to afford to go to college, or may not know how to display their talents the Community Clubhouse is an amazing place to start. When we are able to create new possibilities for our youth, they strive in ways we couldn't even imagine. I can't wait to see what the future of technology is like- can you imagine how small, fast, intelligent computers will become and how they can be used to help people strive in many unimagineable ways!
    <3 Awesome blog linds!

  5. Lindsey I found myself wondering about the technology benefits and how they might benefit you and your wedding. While in class we have discussed looking at locations online. It got me thinking about how creative we can be with technology and how this is something that would benefit you in your current situation. We have designed classrooms before but you could design your wedding rooms. I like the idea that you could create a lot of things with a computer and I am excited to see how our students will find it helpful in their lives.
